PayPal’s new office in West Omaha’s Union Bank & Trust building isn’t just a feat of architectural beauty; it’s also a prime example of top-tier craftsmanship by Miller Electric’s Low Voltage (LV) team. Behind the sleek design and stunning views of the Heartwood Preserve lies a complex network of cabling, fiber optics and security systems, all installed with precision and care.

A Unique Project with Complex Challenges

PayPal’s office spans 137,000 square feet and occupies the second and fourth floors of the five-story building. While it may seem like any other office from the outside, this project was anything but ordinary for Miller Electric’s LV team.

As Low Voltage General Foreman David Klimiuk explains, the raised access flooring posed one of the biggest challenges. “This setup required significant planning,” he says, noting that most of the data cabling and security wiring had to be installed beneath the floor, covered with permanent tiles. “We had to ensure that the pathways for future access were preserved while still delivering a clean and functional space.”

This meticulous attention to detail didn’t stop at the floors. The exposed ceilings presented their own set of challenges. As Low Voltage Technician Nick Rotolo describes it, “Open ceilings are always tricky. You want everything to look good and function perfectly, but it’s not easy.”

Through careful planning and constant coordination, the LV team was able to navigate these challenges, ensuring the project was completed on time and without compromising the design or functionality of the office.

Teamwork and Excellence in Execution

The success of the PayPal project is a direct reflection of the well-trained and dedicated professionals at Miller Electric. Leading the charge was Robbie Kent, Low Voltage Project Manager, with 24 years of experience under his belt. Having worked his way up from technician to LV operations manager before becoming a project manager, Kent’s leadership was instrumental in keeping the project running smoothly.

“Communication was key,” Kent says. “Working with Graham Construction, particularly with Site Superintendent Jeremy Vogel, was a great experience. Their team kept us in the loop, and any roadblocks were dealt with swiftly, allowing us to stay on track.”

Vogel was equally impressed with the Miller Electric team. “It’s nice working with guys who know what they’re doing,” Vogel says. “You clear the roadblocks, and they get the job done.”

This smooth collaboration wasn’t just felt at the leadership level. Second-year Low Voltage Apprentice Johnny Kaczmarek had a valuable learning experience. “I’ve learned so much on this project,” Kaczmarek says. “Everyone I work with is great, and I’m eager to continue growing.”

For seasoned veterans like Low Voltage Technician Nick Rotolo, with over 21 years of experience, this project demonstrated the strength of Miller Electric’s collaborative culture. “We have an amazing team,” Rotolo says. “We work together really well, whether it’s data cabling, security or fiber optics. This job had a bit of everything, which made it both challenging and rewarding.”

The Miller Electric Cabler Program: Building Future Low Voltage Technicians

One of the keys to Miller Electric’s success is its focus on training and education. The Cabler Program provides an entry-level opportunity for individuals looking to start a career in the low voltage industry. This program, which runs for up to 2,000 hours, gives participants hands-on experience in cabling installations like telephone and internet networks.

After completing the Cabler Program, participants can move on to the three-year Low Voltage Apprenticeship, which prepares them for a career as a technician. “The apprenticeship program set the foundation for my career,” Kent says. “It’s a great program where you learn a lot. Even though we don’t get licenses like electricians, the information we learn is invaluable, and I use it every day on the job.”

The PayPal office project was an excellent opportunity for cablers to gain experience across multiple aspects of low voltage work. From pulling security wire and data cabling to working with wireless access points and raised floors, this project provided a well-rounded exposure to the industry. “It was a great learning experience for the team,” Klimiuk says. “They got to work on a little bit of everything, which is invaluable for their growth.”

A Collaborative Effort from Start to Finish

One of the hallmarks of Miller Electric’s approach is the collaborative nature of their work. On the PayPal project, the LV team wasn’t just isolated to their tasks—they were actively involved in every stage of the project. As Site Superintendent Jeremy Vogel notes, “Miller Electric is great to work with because they are always ahead of schedule, and you never have to worry about them. They attend sub meetings and stay involved even though they don’t technically work for the general contractor.”

This proactive, team-oriented approach ensures that all aspects of the project run smoothly and that any potential issues are addressed early.

Miller Electric’s Commitment to Training and Growth

For Miller Electric, the focus isn’t just on completing the current project—it’s about preparing for the future. The commercial electrical contractor is committed to ongoing education and training, ensuring that the crew is always ready for the next challenge.

For apprentices like Johnny Kaczmarek, this commitment to growth is clear. “I’ve had the chance to learn a broad spectrum of things,” he says. “The mentorship I’ve received from guys like Dave Klimiuk has been incredible. There’s always something new to learn, and that’s what keeps me excited.”

The Cabler Program, in particular, is designed to give individuals the skills they need to succeed in the low voltage industry, with opportunities for advancement into the apprenticeship program and beyond. As Miller Electric continues to grow, so do the opportunities for its team members.
