Construction Layout Coordinator

We have made a significant investment in layout and 3D reality capture technology but are not maximizing its value due to a lack of centralized ownership. As Trimble use expands across projects, we are seeing inconsistencies in training, coordination, and field support.

This role establishes a single point of accountability to standardize processes, support the field, and improve overall efficiency and communication from BIM/VDC and Superintendent. It also helps close the current gap between VDC and field operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Training & Development
   • Lead training for Trimble equipment and layout workflows
   • Onboard new users and support ongoing development of field teams
   • Provide hands-on field training as needed
   • Maintain simple, repeatable training materials
   • Lead development and operation of Leica laser scanning hardware and field data collection apps.
2. Project Coordination
   • Coordinate layout resources across projects with Adam Elsasser
   • Plan layout needs with field leadership
   • Align staffing and equipment to project demands
   • Balance workload to avoid delays
3. Field Support & Troubleshooting
   • Primary contact for layout, laser scanning, technological, and other issues.
   • Troubleshoot equipment, data, and workflow problems
   • Provide remote and onsite support as needed
4. Standardization
   • Establish and maintain consistent layout workflows
   • Define procedures for setup, control, and data management
   • Improve consistency to reduce errors and rework
   • Execute and manage 3D laser scanning operations for existing conditions documentation and as-built verification.
5. Layout Oversight & Quality Control
   • Support critical or complex layout tasks
   • Identify and address recurring field issues
6. VDC / BIM Coordination (Provided by Horton’s Office Team)
   • Ensure models and layout data are field-ready
   • Validate layout points before deployment
   • Provide field feedback to improve model quality
   • Coordinate the transfer and preliminary registration of Leica point cloud data to the VDC team for model alignment and QA/QC.
7. Equipment Management
   • Track and manage Trimble and Leica equipment
   • Coordinate calibration, maintenance, and updates
   • Assist in evaluating new tools and technology

REPORTING STRUCTURE

This position will report to Bryan Horton and communicate with Adam Elssaser.

SUMMARY

Assigning a dedicated Trimble / Field Layout Lead will improve consistency, strengthen coordination between VDC and field teams, and maximize the value of our current technology across all projects.
